Protection of Crops

Most of the Tribal Hamlets and fields are located either in the forest or in the proximity to the forest. The total agricultural production of the Attappady Agro Zone has been reduced to the half due to the attack of wild animals. One of the major problems limiting cultivation in the tribal lands is the lack of fencing to protect the crop from the wild elephants attack. Nowadays attack by wild elephants is more frequent due to scarcity of food inside the forest, uncontrolled increase of certain wild elephants due to wild life protection act and also the drying up of water sources in the deep forest. So to protect the crops from wild animals, two way protection is envisaged; first to provide crop insurance coverage to compensate for crop loss due to wild animal attack and secondly by providing protection by fencing.

വന്യമൃഗങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ പ്രധാനമായും ആനകൾക്കെതിരെ ഫലപ്രദമാണ് തേനീച്ച കൊണ്ടുള്ള വേലി.  തേനീച്ച വളർത്തുന്നതിന് പ്രേത്യേക പരിശീലനം നൽകിയാണ് തേനീച്ച വേലി സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നത്.കൃഷിയിടങ്ങൾക്ക് പുറമെ കമ്പികൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വേലി ഉണ്ടാക്കി അതിൽ തേനീച്ച പെട്ടികൾ സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നു. വന്യമൃഗങ്ങൾ ഈ കമ്പികളിൽ തട്ടുമ്പോൾ തേനിച്ചകൾ ഇളകി മൃഗങ്ങളെ ആക്രമിക്കുന്നു. തേനീച്ചയുടെ ചിറകടി മൂലം ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന നേർത്ത  മൂളലുകൾ ആനകളെ അകറ്റുന്നു. ശരിയായി  പരിചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ  കർഷകർക്ക്  വിള സംരക്ഷണത്തോടൊപ്പം  തേൻ എടുത്ത് വിപണനം ചെയ്യുന്നത് വഴി കൂടുതൽ വരുമാനവും ലഭിക്കുന്നു. തേനീച്ച വേലികളിൽ നിന്ന്  ഇത് വരെ 3000 കിലൊ തേൻ  ഉൽപ്പാദിപ്പിയ്ക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. കട്ടേക്കാട്, വരഗം പാടി, നീലിക്കുഴി, വല്ലവട്ടി ഊരുകളിൽ  4 കിലോമീറ്ററോളം തേനീച്ച വേലി നിർമ്മിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 500  കർഷകരുടെ  600  ഏക്കർ കൃഷിയിടത്തിനു സംരക്ഷണം ലഭിക്കുന്നു  കേരള സർക്കാർ സംരംഭമായ   RAIDCO മണ്ണാർക്കാട് മായി സഹകരിച്ചാണ് തേനീച്ച വേലി നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നത്.
