The project aims at ensuring sustainable agricultural development for the whole of Attappady which extends in an area of 745 square kilometer with 192 tribal hamlets. It also aims at sustainable agricultural development of the tribal community of Attappady without disturbing the special agro ecological zone of the area with special emphasis to organic cultivation. The three year programme will help to bring organic agricultural development of most of the fallow lands of the area owned by tribal population. The lands when kept barren will enhance soil erosion and land slide .But if it is covered by crops especially millets belonging to Graminae family soil binding will be more and there are less chances of soil erosion and land slide. It also ensures sustainability, promotes organic agriculture, development of infrastructure in tribal hamlets, enhanced production of traditional crops including minor millets, assured income for tribal farmers, organic certification of the produces, procurement, value addition and marketing. Creation of a seed bank and seed village of traditional Attappady seeds will ensure organic cultivation with traditional crops. The enhanced production will supplement the nutritional needs of the tribal population and also ensures supply of organic nutritive millets for others.
